And Such Were You
Another turn in our discussion.
I am sure there are many out there who are reading this blog series and are fascinated by the many turns and subjects this whole blog has traveled since the start.
Bible study methods- church beliefs both true and false religions, church offices, general subjects. Popes, Roman Catholicism, and so on.
Seems the Bible study methods were the best read. I would conclude that there are a few out there who are interested in that topic. Great. Keep it up.
Here is the new avenue we will travel down for a while.
True conversion.. The requirement that Jesus gave to Nicodemus as recorded in John the third chapter. And yes, I will be using scripture in the Jewish/Christian Bible.
So let me start:
I have been a Christian now for-- let's see, 1968 to 2020, 52 years. I think that is enough time to have somehow accumulated some knowledge.
No. If you have read my postings of many years ago you knw what I am talking about.
I also posted a post on can God be known. Click and go to that one.
Back in 1968 I was at Taft College, journalism major. I got a phone call from home which was down the coast at Brentwood, California. My brother, Todd, had been killed in the Viet Nam war. He was a medic. The date was around March 13 when I received this call. I went home and went through the funeral. I found myself asking just where Todd, in death, was, heaven or the other place. Ie remember thinking of that passage in Job, "The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away." Okay. New Testament says that for a person to see heaven he must believe in Jesus. What does that mean? The Bible says that we are all sinners. "There is none righteous, no not one."
I had been brought up in the Roman Catholic system, so I was somewhat used to the Bible. Never read it up to this point. The priest read it. the nuns taught it in school. Mostly Matthew and the first pope being Peter passage and the authority given to Peter to retain and forgive sins ( don't bother looking, there is none. That is one of the proof texts the Catholic system points to to try to prove something the Bible does not teach)
Anyway. Jesus claimed to be the way to God and God was in heaven. If I was to be in heaven and with God when I died I had to come through Jesus. "I am the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me." He said. It is recorded in the Bible (And the Bible is Bod's communication to man) Also the Bible tells me that all who come to the Father must believe (receive) Jesus. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved."
Enough for one posting. There will be more in the future.

Romaning With Paul- Part Six
Now another way to do a word study is to take a portion of scripture and trace the words within that passage.
I am looking at Chapter 0ne verses 18 through 20:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. NASB
You ask questions of this. How is God known? What is evident? What is the unrighteousness talked about?
Use the book. You have been reading through Romans a few times and by now have an idea of that is in it.
Dig. Use a concordence which will give you each time the word is used.Jot down what you are finding in your journal or that notebook you are keeping for this study.
This takes time. I am not talking about a short devotional time. This is work. But it is worth it.
Please feel free to leave comments so I will know how I am doing.

Faith Is Important
What ever we ask for in prayer we should do in faith.
Faith is not a hope for or something added on to make the request holy.
In Hebrews, one of the epistles located in the Bible, we are told faith is needed to get things done. All the eleventh chapter is packed with people of faith.
Faith has a paradox to it . We are believing on the basis of what God has said that we have what we ask for. It is not a magic formula. We need faith because life is messy and God is mysterious. We come to realize that faith is often confusing
God tells us to ask and believe when we pray. When we trust and obey that is when faith happens.
Therefore, faith is a process not a product. It is journey.
Faith is important because God is important. God is not absent. God wants to provide for His followers.
Sometimes God waits before answering. Faith is needed to beleive that He hears and He is willing to provide your request. But you have to make the request.
If you are a parent you no doubt want to provide all needs of your child. But you are waiting for the child to request the need before you release the answer. God may be like that also. He has what you need but He will not force the provision on you if you don't request it.
Let me know how you are enjoying these posts.

Best Question
![]() |
Buying |
Are you aware that there is a question you can ask yourself that could save you from making the wrong decision? At all times? That question is a simple one.
"What is the wisest thing for me to do?"
Not what is the easiest or most expedient. Just a simple, What is the wisest thing for me to do?
I wish I had known this earlier in life.
Of course everyone says that. There are things you can look back on that you wish you had not done. Like my present finances.
I should be saving up for retirement. Instead I felt I could start a business to bring in money for retirement. But the costs of setting up have exceeded the on-hand resources so I am left with debt far beyond what I have cash to cover.
Sure, someone will say, but it is an investment in your future. Fine. If that explanation works for you, you run with it. It is not working for me.
Now I have to hope my business takes off and stays steady.
I am selling vitamins online. Yes, you can buy vitamins online. You can go here and you can shop and buy.
It all depends on my being able to keep up payments on the program that includes the web site.

Knowing what I know now the answer is probably not. But I must press forward. Whatever the outcome,-- the business takes off or fails,-- I will still have to pay off my debts.

Be Thankful
Tomorrow in the United States is Thanksgiving Day. We have a lot to be thankful for. God is still blessing our nation. He has so far restraned mass evil from overtaking us. Sure, we have attacks from terrorists now, but that just tells me Jesus is coming back soon. The world is not going to get better. When people turn away from God and even go so far as to say He doesn't matter anymore, God leaves that people and nation alone and lets them distroy themselves and their nation.
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise..America was founded by peple who acknowledged God and His soviegty over people and nations. They acknowledged that if we forget God we are doomed.
But individual people, they can be thankful they are still alive. God can stop you breathing at any moment. You are reading this so He hasn't done that to you.
So Have a nice Thanksgiving. Remember who gave it to you and acknowledge your Creator.

Bible Study
Let us get back to basics. I have told you time and again that the source of truth and trustworthiness is the Bible.
Since that is so we need to study it more. I admit I approach the Bible with a big bias. God has spoken and He has caused what He has spoken to be written down. All accounts of historical places, names, and events are assumed to be accurate and true.
So when we hear it being preached from the pulpit we are hearing God's word being spoken. True, it is being heard by us in the voice of a man but the words he is reading are God's word.
It is then our job to read it for ourselves and not just by ourselves. We need small groups. We need to discuss what God has said. We must realize that the words are as important as the thoughts. We can have confidence in its message.
I do not recommend a paraphrase. A paraphrase acts as a commentary not a direct word. I recommend the New American Standard or the New King James. Be careful using the New International version. It is good, but in places it leans toward nonliteral in word choice. I will discuss translations later so I will not, in this posting, venture there.
What translation do you use? Maybe that is soemthing I can post about if there is interest.

Actions Speak your Salvation
This morning Pastor Joe preached from 1John 5:1-15. He said that your belief is not seen if you do nothjing but sit around and act as if what you believe is a privayte affair between you and God. Your actions are. And John points out that your behavior towards others and toward Jesus, who did come in the flesh, shows your salvation.
But basicly, Jesus did come in a body. The body is the package that carries the real man. Jesus had a real body. Only a real body can be hungry. Only a real body can bleed. Only a real body can eat food. Only a real body can ascend into heaven. And only a real body can come back again.
If Jesus were not in a body He wouldn't be anyone to follow. We must be Christ like, John calls us sons of God, if we are Christians. As sons we represent all others are going to see of God. All we do we should do knowing that fact.
Not too many of us are called to stand on street corners and preach. No, But we all are called to act daily in the awareness that we may be the only link between God and man when it comes to the decision he will have to make.
When we get to heaven God is going to ask, "What did you do with my Son, Jesus?" "Why should I let you into my heaven?"

Bible Study = Growth

Looking for Wisdom |
How can your faith grow if you don't know what to base it on? "Faith comes by hearing (And reading and study) and hearing by the word of God."
When you do that Bible study have a pen or pencil handy. Also have a note book ready to jot down what you are discovering. Treat your Bible study time as a treasure hunt. There are little nuggets of wisdom. Some are on the surface and others have to be dug for.
Ask yourself- what is the subject of this passage? Who is speaking? To whom is the passsge being transmitted? What does this passge tell me about God? What does it say about me?What am I to do with what the passage is saying?
All may not be in that one passge. But as you study.. and that means re-reading it over and over, maybe coming back to it another time
Also be in a Bible teaching church and fellowship with others. Ask them questions. Find a Bible Study group. Join. Add your two cents. Grow.

There are blessings in forgiveness
To continue on the subject of forgiveness. You can forgive a person and still not forget what he has done. It will take time for that person to work back in your trust. That is normal. But the main blessing in forgiveness is that it frees you up. You no longer have to carry that heavy burden. You can wave that flag and go on with your life.
Let the offending party go. God will handle him.
If you want a good series on forgiveness and the blessing in forgiveness you can no doubt listen to the pod casts of that time period when Pastor Joe allowed his sermon series to be recorded and mad einto a pod caast. For the podcasts you just go over to http://acts1.libsyn.com/webpage. It is there.
Also a good series around mothers day about Ruth and Naomi. A whole different way of looking at it.

Obama and 2012
I am not sure that this blog is the correct place to post this, but since I fellowship with a group of black Christians I feel that this is the place where I can put this.
Obama is up for reelection this year. In lock step, it seems, the blacks have voted for Obama for no other reason other than he is black.
True, he is black. He is also not the one we should re-elect as President. His actions over the past years have not been good for America and its' freedom. He has now made it his right as President to indefinitely detain any US citizen on the grounds that he or she could be a "terrorist". Yes, on the evening of December 31, 2011 he signed a bill that gave him the power as President of the United States to do so.( Michael Savage, Trickle Down Tyranny,) He has deprived U.S. citizens of the freedom for which our men in uniform are fighting.
And his actions in the past should show us what he feels about America. Have you heard about the utter contempt for America he and his wife, Michelle showed toward the 9/11 observance at the World Trade Center? I am not sure what year. But it was while the American Flag was being folded in the traditional manner that Michelle leaned over and said to her husband, the President of the United States, "All this over a flag?" to which Obama grinned and nodded his head in agreement.(Ibid)
I won't say he leans toward the Marxist mind set. But I would expect more respect for the nation served.
Is Romney any better? I don't know. But can he be worse? I don't know that either.
Judge a man by his actions, is all I am saying.

Naomi the Mentor
We all need a mentor. We all need someone who can take us under their wing, so to speak, and show us how it is done.
In the Bible we have a woman like that. Her story is found in the book of Ruth. Only four chapters. This womans' name is Naomi.
She was a Jew. She was also a mother. She had two sons. Their mames were Mahlon and Chilion. Not much is said about them. They no doubt wouldn't be mentioned if it wasn't for the fact of them being the husbands of two Moabite women. The womens' name were Orpah and Ruth.
It starts out a sad story. There was a famine in the land where Naomi and her husband, Elimelech along with her two osns lived. They were hungray so Elimelech decides to take his family into Moab where there was food. While there Elimelich dies. The two sons marry the Moabite women. They die. Naomi is left with these two Moabite women. Ten years have poassed. Ruth and Orphah have observed during these years how Naoiomi lived after the death of her husband. And how she cared for them even thoughh they were not of the Jewsih faith. The Moanbites were the offfspring of Lot, so they were related by blood but were not in the promised line that God had set up. They were not Jews.
As ther story goesd on there is the reprot of better times back in the land of the Jews. Naomi had no reaon to stay in Moab. She wants to get back to her home land. But since she had no sons anymore nor a husband to take care of her she was without hope. Her only chance was back ion the land. Maybe she could find .. what?? The only way she could live on is to have a husband or sons to care for her. She had none of these. She was too old to get married and have sons.
Sbe only had these two women and they were young enough to find husbands if they returned to the land of Maob. They were aliens.
Naomi tells them to go back home and find a husband. They were young enough and no dount pretty enough to find a husband among the people of Moab.
Orpah went back. But Ruth had seen something in Naomi that made her choose to follow Naomi.
So Ruth went home with Naomi.
The rest of the story is that God blessed Ruth by directing her to the field of a kinsman Redeemer. Naomi was too old to work but Ruth took on the responsibility of the care of her mother-in-law. Rutn no doubt saw something in the example of Naomi that made her want to do this.

Question For Dear Pope
I noticed reported in the Los Angeles Times this morning that the Pope has said that all the people in Mexico needed to overcome their drug problem was faith. Faith , dear Pope, is not the complete answer to the drug problem. Once a person is coming down from a drug habit maybe then faith to know that there is a better way to live comes into play. But as a primary solution to the large drug problem of the country of Mexico is not faith. Faith in what? Faith, the way he uses it, comes out an empty word. Faith in what, dear Pope. faith in what?
Faith is in a person not in an problem. Maybe this is the understanding he has of the concept of faith. If so, shame on him. People look to him to be a bit more knowledgeable and doctrinally correct. Faith defined by the Bible is not a 'something out there".
"But withoutt faith it is impossible to please God, for He who come to God must believe that he exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Hebrews 11:6.
No where in that line from the Bible (Which by the way is like God speaking to you) does it say anything about faith being a cure all for a drug problem.

Forgive? Who Me?

By that, I mean, it is not a group of people forgiving another person for an act of mass murder. This brings to mind all the shootings here in the United States where a gunman comes in and empties his gun on a group of students. Then the other students say they forgive him. No, that is false forgiveness. In that case the students who are alive don't have the right to forgive. The deed was not done to them.
You can only forgive a deed done against you personally. God forgives us because our deed, our sin, is toward Him.
It is easy for a person to ask for forgiveness and very hard for the other person to forgive. True forgiveness cannot be granted until the perpetrator has earned it.. by that I mean, he must confess, repent and do restitution. Every deed has a effect. Every deed leaves a footprint.
Forgiveness does not mean to forget what the other has done. You can forgive but not forget. Forgiveness is not based on forgetting. If you forget the same thing may happen again. Remember the slight so that you can be careful not to do that thing again.
But do your forgiveness with kindness. Don't seek to pay back in kind. We are not talking a tooth for a tooth here. We are talking allowing God to get into the picture and dispensing what needs to be dispensed.
More later.

Bible Teaching
You are called upon to teach the word to others. In order to do so you must know something about it. That is why I am so strong about Bible study. First you must get it into yourself.
I have found a good web sited that helps me to read through the Bible systematically. It is http://www.youversion.com/. It has a drop down window from which you can chose the version of the Bible you wish to read. You don't have to start with the New King James (NKJ) or the New American Standard (NASV) or the International Version (NIV). There are many versions you can chose from. You will find them in a drop down window. Also the languages are ample.
A digital book you can use is This one which concerns 52 questions that a Bible teacher may come across in their teaching.
No one said it was easy. But as you read the Bible you will find yourself changing. God will use what you are reading to do an inner remodeling of you.

Bible Reading 1
I guess the most important thing a Christian can do is read the Bible. This is God speaking to you. When you come to a passage you don't understand, pray over it, ask for wisdom, and you will be given wisdom, and rely on the teaching of the Holy Spirit who dwells in you as His temple, and keep on reading. God may bring a Christian brother or sister into your life who will help you with that passsge. Or you can ask your pastor (You must fellowship with other believers). Just keep reading. Keep on praying. Keep on fellowshipping
If you need a system to get through the Bible reading, I have discovered http://www.youversion.com/ is good. It has Bible versions (KJV, NASB, Good News, etc) and Bible reading plans. Some are year long. Some are topical and take less time. But get in to a Bible reading program
The Bible can be liken to food. The Bible is food for your spiritual body. You need more than that once a week injection you get at the weekly church service.
Gifts for the Church |
I insist you find a good Bible believing, Bible treaching, God honoring church. Plug in and use the spiritual gift that you received the moment you became a Christian. This gift is for the church not for you alone. You are part of the body. A body part. The church needs you and your gift.

God's Plan

Those of us who are Christians are not under the law where it was required to give 23% in tithes. now it is according to how we have prospered during the week. For some that will be little and for others it will be more
God said to the Israelites. if they tithed and brought the whole tithe and offering into the storehouse (that may be the church building today) He would bless them He asks them to test Him in this (Bring your money in and tithe) He would open heaven's door and give them blessings. It may work for the present day Christian. It is worth a try.
To see one of the plans I have for acquiring something to give feel free to click here.
It is worth a try this year. What do I have to lose? I am sure you as well as I would like God's blessing this year not only in the realm of finances but in the total area of life.

Bible Reading Important
I must tell all my readers that the life blood of a Christian's life is the Bible. From a daily reading he gets his spirirual food.
I am following a plan of daily Bible reading. The internet offers a web site that makes this somewhat easy. http://www.youversion.com/ is the place. The plan has many translations to choose from. You are not limited to an English translation. Many other languages are represented here. You can find the version you like and in the language you are most comfortable with.
You can choose a Bible reading plan. Some are shorter than others. Some are a year long. Some are topical.
You need to daily feed on the Word of God. We speak to God in prayer. He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit which He has given us. He uses what He has communicated in the Bihle.
I have finished my 30 days study of the life of Abraham and am now going though the readng of the New Testament books.
What plan are you using to read and get the word in you?

Great Bible reading Site
I am not getting paid to post this. It is just something I feel needs to be known.
For book study programs that I highly approve, you can go to http://www.youversion.com/. Sign in and you can decide what version of the Bible yyou want to read. Some have audio features so you can listen to the scripture being read to you.
There are study plans you can start. If you are new to the idea, you can start with a small unit.. a weeks study. See if you like it. Venture out. It will aid in your spiritual maturity.

Family
Yesterday in my blog I started on marriage as a doctrine. Now I want to talk about families. They are very important to a persons physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual growth. To those of us that God has blessed with children (There are some that God has not allowed to produce children. And they also are blessed. A family, in my definition, is basicly a husband and wife., If kids are part of the package deal, so much the better) this is good.
I posted yesterday that God hates divorce. The reason is very simple. Divorce hurts the image of God. Ands it hurts children. Not only yours alone. Children are observing the adults around them., If they look around and see broken relationships they tend to conclude that this is normal. It is not. One woman and one man. That is normal. And not one woman and another woman. Nor one man and another man.
In the beginning God made them one woman and one man and brought them together. Not two men and not two women. Marriage was sacred.
Here in the State of California, USA, there is a movement to have homosexual marriages acknowledged as legal and viewed in the same way as marriage between a male and a female. They wish to have rights. They seem to be pushing it as a rights issue on the same level as civil rights
It is not. It is a choice they have made and is not a rights issue.
But I am getting off the issue.
Families. The key to having a healthy family is to have Christ at the center. Relationships in life go better, I feel, is you have a sticking point; a standard. He should be rhe center of everything that goes on. Now to get back to marriage. That is the foundation or central point of all families.I feel God wants to protrect, and expand thre family unit.
I will close this posting with something many historians acknowledge: "The family is the building block of society; as the family goes, so goes society."

New Toy
I finally have enough money to venture out and get an Ipad.
I am not a fan of Apple and I don't think this will change my mind. But it is a tool that a good amount of people in my church fellowship possess. So I decided whern ever the time came when I had enough money to buy one of those tools I would.
I discovered that it has a section or app known as ITunes and within ITunes there is an link to a whole lot of video and audio files. One file grouping is concerning universitys and colleges. WIthin that grouping is my university, Biola University. And also files on classes taught at Dallas Seminary.
I thus will be able to get classes that I have not been able to take when they were for credit. This time I can sit back and enjoy great teaching.
And this also will enhance my input in this blog.
Stay tuned. More is to come. Become a member of this blog and follow along.
